About
For some people their career dye is cast when, as a youngster, they see someone or something inspirational – a great sportsman, perhaps; a world-conquering businessman; an eminent physician; a rock star; a Hollywood legend; or a towering force for good, like Nelson Mandela. What got the occupational juices flowing for me was the most unlikely, unconventional and hilarious method of selling instant mashed potato.
As a piece of British creativity and lateral thinking I’d say the Smash Martians are right up there with Shakespeare, Henry Moore and The Beatles.
I got my first job as a trainee copywriter at FCB on London’s Baker Street. This was followed by a year at Publicis in Paris, three years at McCann’s, London, and five years with Chetwynd Haddon’s, London, before heading west to Bristol for a brief stint at an agency that is now part of Bray Leino.
I remained in Bristol and started Elm Road Productions; a small commercials production company, which went on to become a much bigger and very successful commercials production company, through which I directed, produced, and sometimes wrote and conceived over 200 ads for some of the biggest agencies in the UK, throughout mainland Europe and into the Far East in Hong Kong and Tokyo.
Elm Road was around for ten years and, long story; in 2002 I closed it down and returned to my original passion of copywriting.
Since then I’ve worked freelance for many agencies, small, large and in between; to name just a few; Saatchi & Saatchi (in Trinidad and Bermuda), Mason Zimbler, Hughes, Golley Slater and EMO, plus lots more.
Clients include: Saatchi & Saatchi (in Trinidad and Bermuda), Mason Zimbler, Hughes, Golley Slater and EMO
Since the days of the genius of John Webster and his Smash Martians, the Copywriter has to now be able to weave his words across a multitude of media channels, and I’m as happy and comfortable with banners, virals and all things digital as I am with TV, print, DM and wherever else we need to wrest the cash from or arrest the conscience of our target audience, whoever they may be.
Much has changed since the tinny guffaws of the Smash Martians so delighted us, but one thing hasn’t; this is still about coming up with compelling ideas, cleverly art directed and lucidly argued. Always has been, always will be.
