Many moons ago I stepped through the doors of top ad agency, FCB, on London’s Baker Street to attend an interview for the position of Trainee Copywriter. I was clutching a flimsy portfolio of pretend adverts and, to give you a clue as to when this auspicious event took place, I sported a splendid mullet haircut and the type of moustache as favoured by Tom Selleck in ‘Magnum - PI’. Astonishingly FCB hired me; they must have liked the ads because it couldn’t have been the hair.
In the years that have since passed (at warp factor 5) I have worked for other fine advertising agencies and been the brains behind many incredibly effective campaigns for some of the most famous brands in the world, plus others on a more local scale.
In 1992 I took leave of my senses. I quit my well-paid job and started a business in one of the most competitive industries there is - TV commercial production. After several unscheduled changes of underwear during the first few months, it went on to be rather successful. I directed, produced (and often conceived) over 200 ads and won 20 odd gongs for my troubles.
In everything I do I begin with the simple assumption that nobody gives a monkey’s about advertising. To make them you had better say something that is clever, concise and compelling; something that somehow cuts through the hundreds of priorities people have in their lives other than buying what you’re flogging. Priorities like paying their mortgage, raising their kids, waxing their legs, feeding the cat and trimming their nasal hair are more important than noticing your ad.
Ninety nine times out of a hundred I get it spectacularly right.
